Abstract

Background: Diffuse hemangioma of the rectum is a very rare tumour; to-date described only in over 200 cases, mostly in surgical literature.Case Report: We report the case of diffuse cavernous hemangioma of the rectum in a 30-year-old man. The patient presented with recurrent rectal bleeding. Plain radiography of the abdomen showed multiple pelvic phleboliths. CT revealed the thickening of the rectal wall, multiple intramural and a few extramural phleboliths. The tumour did not show significant enhancement on post-contrast scanning. The adjacent anatomical structures were not infiltrated and other abdominal and pelvical organs were found to be normal. Angiography of the inferior mesenteric artery was inconclusive. The patient did not give his consent for further diagnostic procedures and suggested surgical treatment. Conclusions: The CT image is very characteristic of diffuse cavernous hemangioma of the rectum and hence in some cases the diagnosis and assessment of the extent of the disease before planned surgery may be based on it.
