Abstract
Background: Geographic tongue manifests as lingual lesions of well demarcated areas of erythema surrounded by a white keratotic border. Its causes remain unknown.
Case report: We report the case of a young female with geographic tongue that occurred around the
periovulatory time of her spontaneous menstrual cycle. This is the first such case report in the
literature showing a relationship between the menstrual cycle and occurrence of cyclic oral
lesions. We were also able to follow and describe the effects of assisted reproductive techniques
and pregnancy on the patient’s stomatitis.
Conclusion: Although there is a relationship between the periovulatory time period and onset of lesions, the various hormonal effects on the geographic tongue remain to be clearly defined.
