Abstract
Background: Melanoma is a common disease that may present in non-cutaneous sites and recur many years
after initial diagnosis. These characteristics can make diagnosis and long-term management a challenge for physicians.
Case Report: This case involves a patient who experienced a recurrence of melanoma in the form of a large pelvic mass 35 years after an initial diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous disease. The presentation
of melanoma as a pelvic lesion is highly unusual, and the disease free interval experienced by this patient was the longest we found noted in the medical literature.
Conclusions: Physicians should be aware that melanoma may recur many years after initial diagnosis, and
involve numerous non-cutaneous sites. Unfortunately, there are no good recommendations for long-term screening.
