Abstract
Background: Brain abscess is a rare complication in neonates. We present a case of a neonate who developed
multiple brain abscesses.
Case Report: A 6-days-old female neonate was transferred to us from a State hospital with a history of fever, lethargy, altered level of consciousness, and generalized tonic clonic seizures. Examination on admission to our hospital revealed the patient to be febrile, lethargic and drowsy. Her anterior fontanelle was bulding. A spinal tap was performed with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of turbid
appearance; findings are nonspecific, resembling bacterial meningitis. The Gram stain and the
bacterial culture were both negative. The MRI of the head revealed multiple contrast-enhancing mass lesions in the bilateral frontal region and parietoocipital region a diagnosis of multiple
brain abscesses was made.
Conclusions: The presentation of brain abscess in infants and children can be nonspecific, and a high index of suspicion is required.
