Abstract
Background: Solitary fibrous tumor is an atypical soft tissue neoplasm seen in thoracic as well as various extra thoracic areas. However, only one case of such a tumor arising from uterine cervix has
been reported in the Literature.
Case Report: A 51-year-old postmenopausal woman presented with an episode of vaginal bleeding. Gynecologic examination and ultrasonographic study revealed a sizable mass protruding from the cervix
into the vagina, with an approximate diameter of 9cm. The mass was resected via trans-vaginal route and evaluation of the mass revealed it was firm with homogenous solid gray-white cut surface. Histologically, it was composed of spindle to plump cells arranged as fascicles showing hyper cellular areas alternating with less cellular and myxoid zones. High mitotic activity (more than 4/10 HPF) and necrosis were noted in hyper cellular areas. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were negative for actin, desmin, CD10, ER, PR, CD 117 and cytokeratin, while showed strong and diffuse reactivity for vimentin and CD34. A diagnosis of malignant solitary fibrous tumor was established based on microscopic appearance and immuno-histochemical profile of
tumor.
Conclusions: Although rare, solitary fibrous tumor should be considered in differential diagnosis of any mass lesion of uterus composed of spindle cells, especially when immuno-histochemical findings are
against more usual mass lesions of this area including smooth muscle tumors and stromal tumors
of endometrial type.
