Abstract

Background: Bochdalek’s hernia is the most frequent congenital defect of the diaphragm. It normally presents as an emergency in newborns or remains non-symptomatic. Thus, it is really infrequent that it presents as a surgical emergency due to gastrointestinal symptoms.Case Report: We report on a case of a 45 year old male patient who complained of pain on the back side of his chest along with nausea and constipation. He had a previous record of respiratory and pleural disease. Clinical examination found a hypoventilation in the whole left thorax. Chest X-ray and thoracic CT-scan were carried out and the diagnosis of Bochdalek’s hernia complicated with intestinal obstruction was reached.According to this diagnostic, surgical treatment was performed. We make a review of the epidemiology of Bochdalek’s hernias andways of presenting, diagnosing and treating. Conclusions: Bochdalek’s hernia is an infrequent congenital defect of the diaphragm, especially in adults. Its way of presenting in adults is normally non-acute. Surgical treatment is recommended in most cases. It can be performed means laparoscopy, thoracotomy or laparotomy, depending on the surgeon preferences or skills.
