Abstract
Background: Rhabdomyoma of soft tissue origin is totally benign tumor that accounts for 1-2 % of all skeletal muscle tumors. Rhabdomyomas are divided into two main types: fetal and adult. Adult
rhabdomyoma occurs mainly in the head and neck area. In this paper we report an extremely rare case of this tumor in an adult person in lumbar region.Case Report: The patient, a 70-years-old woman, was admitted to the clinic with provisional diagnosis of tumor in the right lumbar region. Macroscopically, this was well circumscribed, encapsulated, nodular and firm tumor. Histological examination revealed well differentiated tumor of muscular origin: rhabdomyoma. Immunohistochemically, positive stainings were achieved for myoglobin, striated muscle actin and desmin. Postoperative period was unremarkable. Conclusions: We would like to emphasize that rhabdomyoma should be considered in the clinicopathological differential diagnosis of tumors in lumbar region. Further observations and follow-up of such cases are needed to define the behavior and prognosis of these tumors.
