Abstract

Background: Introducing new perioperative protocol in our department has improved the prognosis for patients with sternal wound infection after a cardiac surgery.
Case report: The aim of this case report is to describe therapeutic management in 70-year-old patient who revealed sternal infection after the combined cardiac procedure. During 44 months following
the operation he was treated by debridement of infected wound five times without a significant
effect. We were forced to introduce a new strategy of treatment. Finally he was successfully treated with omental plasty and hiperbaric oxygenation therapy and now 43 months after the treatment he shows no signs of infection.
Conclusions: The treatment management should be individually applied for each patient and additional
method such as Hyper Baric Oxygenation, could be used for improving the results.
